Back in 2016, Blackpool Coastal Housing teamed up with Blackpool and the Fylde College to provide functional skills courses in the heart of our local communities.

This year, the Community Learning Programme not only focused on Maths and English but included an employability element, meaning that every learner who completed the course also benefited from a qualification in Employability Skills.

We recently heard from one of our learners, Cassie, about her experience…

My name is Cassie and I have been taking part in BCH’s Community Learning Programme since September 2017. I didn’t enjoy school and struggled with my English and Maths and left school without qualifications. I wanted to get a job so I could be financially independent and be able to buy new things for myself.

I came along to the sessions at Argosy and didn’t know anyone, but soon found that everyone was friendly and I’ve now made some really good friends. During the sessions, we’ve helped each other to develop our skills. I was delighted when our tutor Emma told me that I had passed my exams.

Attending the weekly sessions has helped me to gain employment and I was delighted when I was offered a job with Blackpool Entertainment Ltd in the Winter Gardens which I am very much enjoying. If anyone would like to get their English and Maths qualifications I’d tell them to come along to the sessions with BCH and Blackpool and the Fylde College. They are very informal and everyone is very supportive. It’s really helped me.

Since the project launched in October 2016, over 40 customers have gained qualifications and several learners have progressed onto further training, employment or volunteering opportunities. The project was set up to develop a way of helping our customers to access free training opportunities by removing some of the barriers they face such as travel costs and child care issues.

This year’s learners have recently taken their exams and the courses are due to recommence this September following a break for the summer. To book your place or to find out more contact the BCH Involvement and Communications Team on 01253 477911 or email
